This is my latest Queer Profile and one I am particularly proud of.
Alec was born in rural Cape Breton as intersex. At that time, in that small town, the doctors didn’t know what they were dealing with–the words genderqueer and nonbinary were not yet invented–and he was forced to take hormones and threatened with institutionalization. He moved to Toronto as an adult, where he hung in lesbian and later trans circles. It was only in his late 30s that he understood that he was intersex, and also embraced his native two-spirit identity.
To me, the concept of living life til almost 40 without a solid gender identity is difficult to imagine, and just part of the fascinating story revealed here. I was also impressed and moved by Alec’s gentle and beautiful energy.
